A Cause to Be Thankful by Yolanda Shanks: Book Review

What is the importance of gratitude, and is it missing or present from today’s society? What can a person be thankful for, regardless of life’s circumstances? Who is Jesus Christ? Who are the 10 lepers mentioned in the Bible?

These questions are answered in Yolanda Shanks’ new book, A Cause to be Thankful. The book attempts to focus on the 10 lepers and how their healing is related to the issue of gratitude. In a nutshell, the story of the 10 lepers is this: 10 people with an incurable disease, who were ostracized by society because of their condition, experienced a miraculous healing from Christ. After their healing, they left the area where they had been quarantined to celebrate their recovery.

How many people returned to Christ to say “thank you” for being healed? Only one.

Shanks believes the one leper who returned to say “thank you” had gratitude while the other nine did not.

While there is evidence to back this claim, the theme of gratitude vs. ingratitude from the 10 lepers story was difficult to see throughout A Cause to be Thankful. The chapters of the book didn’t unite to match the theme of the book. However, the chapters are short, making it easy to stick with, and it does contain other valuable information to grow the reader’s spiritual life.
