Angel Detox: Book Review

Angel Detox by Doreen Virtue & Robert Reeves: Book Review

What is Detox?

The idea of detoxing isn’t a new one. It isn’t an uncommon occurrence to see a young celebrity, once filled with the promise of a bright future, fall from a great standing in life to his or her knees. The cause is often an addiction to something harmful. What follows, if the star is lucky, isn’t death but a rough, rocky period filled with loving people and experts that help the struggling person get rid of the substance or substances threatening the existence or vitality of life. The usual culprits in the person’s journey are drugs, alcohol or both.

Detox on a Higher Level

In Angel Detox, Doreen Virtue and Robert Reeves present some ideas on detoxing that definitely let you know that their idea of living fully isn’t just living without drugs or alcohol. Each of them has gone through a detox of some sort, whether it was eliminating a relationship or specific foods to achieve the highest level of health. They claim that making such small choices as eliminating dairy or coffee, if you are called to, may help you achieve your career dreams faster.

Unseen Elements of a Spiritual Realm

I decided to read this book because I loved Assertiveness for Earth Angels: How to be Loving Instead of “Too Nice”, written by Doreen Virtue. However, this book is less practical. That is, Angel Detox contains fewer practical ideas and expands more on the spiritual realm. It makes some assumptions that you know what certain things are, such as orbs and auras. For example, “Her aura was bright and clean, with gorgeous orbs in it.” (88) What is an aura? What is an orb? I think I have a general idea, but Angel Detox didn’t give a definition. Many of the ideas presented in the book were a bit too extreme for me to take action on – I’m skeptical that they exist, therefore, I’m skeptical that they would work. There is no foundation as to where some of the ideas come from. For example, the authors speak with confidence on the names and qualities of certain angels, but they do not explain how they know these facts. Have these beliefs been passed down through oral tradition, a sacred book, personal revelation, or other inspiration? It is not explained.

A Call to Live Healthier

There were some aspects of Angel Detox that address how to detox in everyday living. Issues like water quality, chemicals in plastic and other items, and how to find healthy foods prompted me to make changes.

Assertiveness for Earth Angels by Doreen Virtue: Book Review

How to be Loving Instead of “Too Nice”

Assertiveness for Earth Angels

When People Take Advantage of You

It’s a frustrating experience to have people mistake your kindness as an excuse to walk all over you. Doreen Virtue’s new book Assertiveness for Earth Angels is designed for those that she calls “earth angels”. As such, they repeatedly have the same problems in relationships. These kind-hearted people are taken advantage of over and over and they have a hard time standing up for themselves.

Do You Believe in Karma?

Assertiveness for Earth Angels touches on spiritual elements such as crystals, negative energy and superpowers. Christ and God are also mentioned, but the book makes no assumption that readers believe in the Bible. The book uses Virtue’s background in psychology to explain common people problems. What are the traits of a toxic relationship? Why is it so damaging to be in a relationship with someone who has a substance abuse problem? Virtue gives answers in a no-nonsense way.

Finding Your Life Purpose

The book includes a few tips on how to find your purpose and how to stay healthy. Virtue urges readers to “be your own authority figure” rather than seeking the approval of others when making decisions.
